About Me

My photo
The older I get the better I was... but after many years of idle burrowing the candle of desire is still burning and I have come to realise that running is as much a part of me as my heart and lungs... In Christmas 2008 I was 82kg and was not running a step..This is my journey , the journey of the wombat...Dogged...determined...persistent...and maybe a little grumpy.. but like the wombat my journey is territorial, its about running and I am going to work to protect it...Come along for the ride and see if I can become the wombat warrior. 2009 was a mixed bag for the wombat's journey.A top ten placing in both the Bridges and the City Surf brought a small sense of achievement but also a degree of frustration.... I think I can do better and better I will in 2010. A better run in the Busso Half iron man in support of TV in his swim and bike ride and that was about the extent of my racing. Lets see what happens in 2010 as "My journey Continues". Now in 2011 the wombat will continue his journey, but not alone the wombat has a youngling who knows how to dig. 2015 and its a new beginning , time goes on and the journey to the 2016 World Masters is under way.

2015 Chevron City to Surf for ACTIVE

This morning in Perth there was a celebration of distance running involving a marathon, half marathon , 4km and 12km event.

Since 1975 when 500 runners set off from the CBD the Perth City to Surf has grown into what it is a now, a set of races that stop a city. At 6am the marathon got underway along one of the most scenic, but challenging courses there is to offer over this distance.

2014 winner Yuki Kawauchi was again standing on the line and was sure to make it a tough ask for local Irishman, Chris O'Neill, to dominate given his current form. From the gun Kawauchi put the hammer down and soon opened a commanding lead and while he raced on into no-man's land Chris O'Neill found himself in the same situation while running for second.

In the women's  race scenario was emerging. 2009 winner, Magda Karimali-Poulos moved into the lead early while Rolenda Giorgi and Nera Jareb battled it out for the silver running in the 3hour bus being driven by Raymond Lampard.

Kawauchi was first over this line in a very solid 2hr 16min 23sec run made all the more impressive given the sea breeze that buffeted the runners over the home section of the course. O'Neill followed 19 minutes later in second place in 2:35:49, and Justin Kelly, a middle distance runner who has turned his had to the longer distacnes was third in 2:47:58. Magda was first woman over the line in 2hr 58min 48sec.

In the half marathon again two runners dominated from the very start.
Francisco Sanzana , a Chilean runner who has been spending time working with Raf Baugh and TRC, demonstrated some great form in never being headed while Cassie Fien, a previous winner went back to back in 2015. Francisco Santana won the men’s half marathon in 1:09:18 while Queenslander Cassie Fien took the women’s crown in  1:14:21.

The 4km event, which got under way  at 8:30 was set up to be a head to head for Chris Dale and Ben Chamberlain who had been engaged in some very tight racing all year.
Chamberlain was aggressive from the start and pushed on the flat early section and while this appeared to Dale it took more out of Chamberlain and the race became a repeat of their 2014 battle royale. Going up the third climb of the three sisters Dale exerted his strength and edged away from a fading Chamberlain to claim victory while Keely Waters went back to back in the women's race

Roberto Busi ran a personal of 37 mins 52 secs to take out the Blue Ribbon 12km even with Josh Todesco 43 secs back in second and Thomas Bruins third in 38:36. Todesco was aggressive early with Busi sitting in a pack that saw Berry and Bruins do some hard work to close what extended out to a 10 second break at one point in the race. With around 3.5km to go Busi seemed to sense it was time and made a strong and definitive move. Busi has been chasing this title for a very long time and this morning's result was well deserved.
Linda Spencer took out the women's race in  43:05 and like Todesco was aggressive early, unlike him however, this move proved decisive and she was never headed.
Well done to everyone who finished today.
A big shout out to Glen Quartermaine who again ducked under the magical 4 hour mark, once again showing us his wombat given his preparation time.
