About Me

My photo
The older I get the better I was... but after many years of idle burrowing the candle of desire is still burning and I have come to realise that running is as much a part of me as my heart and lungs... In Christmas 2008 I was 82kg and was not running a step..This is my journey , the journey of the wombat...Dogged...determined...persistent...and maybe a little grumpy.. but like the wombat my journey is territorial, its about running and I am going to work to protect it...Come along for the ride and see if I can become the wombat warrior. 2009 was a mixed bag for the wombat's journey.A top ten placing in both the Bridges and the City Surf brought a small sense of achievement but also a degree of frustration.... I think I can do better and better I will in 2010. A better run in the Busso Half iron man in support of TV in his swim and bike ride and that was about the extent of my racing. Lets see what happens in 2010 as "My journey Continues". Now in 2011 the wombat will continue his journey, but not alone the wombat has a youngling who knows how to dig. 2015 and its a new beginning , time goes on and the journey to the 2016 World Masters is under way.

PSA All Schools 5km Cross Country 1st August

The season recommenced with the All Schools 5km event being conducted in Antarctic conditions along the South Perth Foreshore. Wesley’s John Taylor had established a fast and spectator friendly course over a relatively flat and wet   field which made for some great racing.

205 boys line up for the start of Saturday's event

The three week break had not done our boys any favours however a number had kept up their running over the break and this worked to their favour. Today’s event also saw the Guildford runners contesting the H. Whiteman Trophy for the 5km Short Course Champion and while last year’s winner, Ben Armstrong was  keen to replicate his victory from last year it was always going to be a big ask given the form of Declan White, Bailey Gillam and the fast improving Cameron Adams.  Missing from the ranks was Liam Stacey due to an operation on his foot however he was still there to cheer his team mates on and added a strong voice to the large parent contingent who were there to cheer our lads on.

Vice Captain Marcel Niutta helped set the team's tone

From the very start our boys ran aggressively with Vice Captain Marcel Niutta attacking from the gun and running with the top 10 for the early stages of the race. Armstrong, Gillam and White were also in that lead group and quickly settled in to finding a rhythm that would move them further towards the front of the pack.

Armstrong and Adams worked together in the early stages of the event to move themselves forward
The race leader, Trinity’s Mike Martin was dominate throughout and despite a stumble in the early stages of the race was never headed, and in fact from the 1km point on continued to extend his lead, going on to win with a solid 15min 11sec for the 4.84km course.

Bartholomeusz leads from Boyd heading out to the final zig-zag
Going into the second km the early pace took a toll on Niutta and he had started to fall back however, Bailey Gillam and Declan White had moved up into the lead group and Cameron Adams was working and pulling Ben Armstrong up towards the pointy end of the field as well.  While it was evident that a cold was causing breathing issues for Armstrong , further back Bailey Bartholomeusz looked to have turned his early season’s breathing issues around  and was running strongly near the middle of the field working with Sebastian Boyd  and steadily picking up places.

Adams running on for a strong place in the senior
event
As with previous races our younger lads showed that , should they chose to stay with the sport that they will have a big impact in the years to come. Rory Adams, Heath Collins and Jake Manolini all gave inspiring performances with Rory (yr 7) finishing 72nd in a senior competition. Collins and Aiden McLaughlin (new to the team this year) ran brilliantly as a team. Over the closing stages however, Collins pulled away from his team mate  winning a 250m sprint finish by 0.2 of a second against the more fancied trinity runner. McLaughlin was having his own battle royale some 20 metres  behind against a Christchurch  runner and was narrowly edged out by a second to place 106th

Going into the final out and back zig-zag Gillam and White looked to have secured top 15 places yet while Gillam was in open space the group behind him, including White , were chasing hard. Gillam lifted to secure 11th place while White edged out Aquinas runner, Regan Clarke , for 15th place.

McLaughlin leading from Collins as the two pull away from a larger group
of pursuers

It came down to this for Collins. A 250m sprint to the line and a 0.2 victory while
McLaughlin was battling it out with Christ Church.
Gillam’s 11th place meant that he was our first runner home and in doing so became the winner of the H. Whiteman Trophy for the short course championship.  In terms of racing this is exciting because the 8km event is the final race of the season and with a number of Guildford  boys very capable of managing the longer distance comfortably, we could see anyone of 6 lads take out the E.J Warren Trophy for this distance.

Alexander fought to hold his finishing place in his run for the line through the wet
fields.

Disappointingly our boys ended the day in 7th position however, their performance enabled them to secure bonus points for the race which means they still have a realistic chance of beating Christ Church  and ending the season in 6th position. This will require a determined effort but the squad has learnt to never say never.

Next week the squad will run the final of the relay series. This will be a 3man 5km relay and will be contested at Hale School. The first 5 teams over the line count for points and those runners not named in a  team will all run the first leg, providing a final hit out before the 8km in Kings park on the 15th August.
