About Me

My photo
The older I get the better I was... but after many years of idle burrowing the candle of desire is still burning and I have come to realise that running is as much a part of me as my heart and lungs... In Christmas 2008 I was 82kg and was not running a step..This is my journey , the journey of the wombat...Dogged...determined...persistent...and maybe a little grumpy.. but like the wombat my journey is territorial, its about running and I am going to work to protect it...Come along for the ride and see if I can become the wombat warrior. 2009 was a mixed bag for the wombat's journey.A top ten placing in both the Bridges and the City Surf brought a small sense of achievement but also a degree of frustration.... I think I can do better and better I will in 2010. A better run in the Busso Half iron man in support of TV in his swim and bike ride and that was about the extent of my racing. Lets see what happens in 2010 as "My journey Continues". Now in 2011 the wombat will continue his journey, but not alone the wombat has a youngling who knows how to dig. 2015 and its a new beginning , time goes on and the journey to the 2016 World Masters is under way.

Oh My God If Only I had Fur......

Well Courtney has headed over east to continue his journey. The Wombat wishes him all the very best in his pursuit to be the best he can be.... I guess now I have to get really fit so someone can take up the tempo runs.... Marc See maybe.... even Patto....

Anyway winter is moving in and the cold has crept into the bones of this old boy. Its times like these that I wish I had fur because stepping out the door into some of the weather of late has not been a pleasurable experience. I must say that once I have wormed up things are a lot more cheerful but that does take a little time. I have often been asked " What do you think about on your runs? Do you listen to an Ipod etc"

To the first question I think about lots of things and sometimes nothing at all. I have run for three hours with a mate once and apart from the pleasure of each others company and the chance to be moving at a steady clip through the bush we did not speak until we got back to the cars. As to listening to Ipods I tend to get caught up in the moment and find they are more of a distraction to what is happening around me.

Running is an amazing sport as it involves very little and can be done anywhere. i love the challenge of pushing myself to new things and as I get older this has become a challenge in itself. I often wonder what would have happened if I had not taken a break from the sport. However I now have a new appreciation for how fit I once was. In some respects this may make me a better athlete in the long run. It certainly puts me in a position to say to athletes " Never take anything for granted, especially your fitness" I wold say stop and smell the roses every now and then . Take a look at what you are working to achieve or what you have achieved so you can cherish a moment or even the moments that have already passed. Sometimes we get so busy working towards something that we actually forget to celebrate and appreciate what we did when we actually get there.

As for having fur... I guess its time to pull on the tights again. ( Must be getting soft in my old age, as a young wombat it was shorts and T-shirt at the most in any weather)

Barrel on wombats....

  2. keep at it! we have such a nice climate here in Perth. The sooner one starts running the sooner one warms up. Body core temp is the key. Hope CC makes it big in the east!
